The National Museum of Ireland – Country Life will deliver a special programme exploring aspects of Mayo’s famine and emigration history to celebrate the ‘Home to Mayo’ festival in May 2022.
Ireland’s great exodus spans more than a century and has spawned an incredible worldwide diaspora of some 80 million people who claim Irish ancestry today.
Emigration is embedded in the story of Ireland itself. This aspect of Irish history is rich in stories of endurance and success but also of hardship and a poignant yearning for home – often experienced for generations.
Museum visitors next May will be able to go on a new gallery trail highlighting Museum objects that reflect some of these themes. There will also be talks and tours taking place during May under the theme of hunger and home. Further details to be announced
